Bucket List

No, I haven’t seen the movie.

I’m not a huge fan of Jack Nicholson, (although Morgan Freeman is up there on my list with Denzel W as far as acting capability and charisma) and I’m pretty (okay, extremely) picky about which movies I see in theatres. Especially considering nowadays a trip to the theatres (plus popcorn, a drink, and something to munch on as a distraction while we stare at the candy-stained floor during horrendous previews, whether the movie be an adult flik or a child’s cartoon (!)), even during matinee hours, costs about 20 bucks a person – at least!

But don’t get me started on inflation…

I was thinking the other day about the concept of the movie, and the idea of a “Bucket List”, and I thought to myself, “this isn’t such a bad idea”. Why not make a list of goals; both realist and seemingly impossible? It could be fun to see what God allows us to acheive, and there doesn’t seem to be anything inherently wordly about dreaming/wishing for things in the future, as long as those dreams don’t fog up your reality and make you misstep where God has currently called you.

So that said, I’m curious to see other people’s Bucket Lists (in case you haven’t figured it out or didn’t know, this is a list of things you would like to one day do/achieve/etc. on this side of eternity) and I’m going to list a few of my own. (I may add to it, and I definitely can’t remember all of the times I have said “hmm wouldn’t that be a cool thing to do one day….”)

Spiritual goals are wonderful, but they make a separate list. This is more the practical, the crazy, the whimsical, and quite possibly the laughable.

Here are a few of mine (not in order of significance)

My Bucket List (“one day i would like…”)

1. To dance in the rain (preferably w someone else) with no umbrella and most definitely in public

2. To participate in a well-organized flash mob

3. To conquer my fear of flying

4. To go ice fishing

5. To write a book and have it published

6. To do the ironman in Hawaii

7. To contribute to the fight against cancer or the AIDS crisis

8. To do undercover journalistic work for the sake of something important, such as fighting abortion, genocide, abuse, etc.

9. To hike/run/bike (w/e) the entire C&O

10. To raise a bunch of boys (I like girls, but I like little boys more; they are a whole lotta fun and a lot less emotionally complicated! :) ) and do crazy non-momish things with them (climb trees, survive in the wilderness, go ziplining… idk – things like that) until I’m too old and decrepit to keep moving around :)

11. To visit Cicily/Ireland

12. To get paid to run (I’ve heard that Nike and other sports companies pay you to test out their shoes/clothes as a runner… that would be so sweet…)

get the idea? cool.

So before God calls you home, what are some things you would like to do to enjoy what He has made for our good pleasure? Why not make a list?

(Yes, there are many more important things to do, but please tell me this could potentially rank above watching “American Idol” for 4 hours, 2 nights in a row…)

  1. Welcome back to wordpress btw…

I just wanted to share a few things:
    1) Is it just me, or does that picture of a bucket look like its about an inch tall? Really. Look real close… I think that means you can only fit one of those 12 points in it….so which one?

    2) That flash mob thing was amazing. We’ve got flash mobs down in Texas, but just call ‘em stampedes….lol. But seriously, I think a flash mob in a little town would be amazing!

    3) As for your fear of flying, you’re in good company. R.C. Sproul and I feel the exact same way…!

  2. mmmm. I love this. Have had one (that I keep revising) since I was like 12.
    a few…
    1. jump a train
    2. record a song
    3. do mission work in India or Africa
    4. become fluent in Spanish and Italian and if at all possible Mandarin or Hindi
    5. play cello at Carnegie :) (lofty, lofty aspirations….)
    6. raise a lot of kids

have you made a list of the “listish” things you’ve accomplished? (since you haven’t had previous lists…) those are exceedingly gratifying, especially when one looks at current lists full of mostly unlikely aspirations….

  3. post script: I love you. <3

post post script: and I would be happy to help you conquer your fear of flying. =)

    post…… script:
without conquering said fear how do you propose to get to Ireland or Sicily? I have an inkling that you would find traveling at length by boat equally as frightening as flying…

  4. i want to smoke a pipe once too I think.

maybe I could combine some of them… smoke a pipe while ice fishing in ireland and dancing in the rain…

  5. Is it possible that y’all have too much fun on the blog? lol.

and hasn’t anyone ever told you that it’s not lady-like to smoke a pipe…at least while ice fishing, because it scares away all the wet leprechauns…. ;)

  6. lol! hahaha thats such a great mental image. i think i may design a wet leprachaun when i get the chance. hahahaha

liz, I think looking back and listing out our accomplishments sounds rather therapeutic and self-confidence boosting, eh? just grab me a therapist, my blanky, and an empty love cup and i’ll be good to go!

just joking :) i know what you mean that would be fun.

although the only one i can think of is when mom let me throw an egg at a rock on my 16th birthday. it wasn’t as gratifying as throwing it at someone or a more significant inanimate object, but it was nice.

i thought about spelunking, but i’m too afraid. and you are right – i’m not so keen on (large) boat travel at long distances. maybe I could kayak…

and i’l jump the train with you, and i think you and i and kate need to record together sometime, and if you get tired of your children send them my way – I’m not sure you can handle all 12, so how about we make a deal and i stay single so I can nanny for you?

  7. well it can be silly or serious things… there’s no hard fast rule they have to be from prior official lists…
    some:
    1. do a flip in swing-dancing
    2. shoot a revolver
    3. get CPR license

    etc. you get the idea…

and maybe it’s silly and therapeutic but it does help keep me from looking at the list of all the things i want to do but can’t right now… like spelunking… and collapsing in a puddle of tears. …just kidding. :)

mmm i doubt i’ll get tired OF my children, but i’ll admit it will be a rather exhaustifying though joyful task caring for them… i’ll at least send them to you for nutrition and safety advice. ;) “aunt jenny will now instruct you on the evils of gluten and preservatives…” no pop tarts at your house, hm?

btw, you don’t have to be single to nanny. and that is a rather silly bargain, you know. :)

  8. LOL….! no poptarts….? that was hilarious!
